Buying a Baguette

Baguette cartoon
This cartoon by Cam Cardow from the Ottowa Citizen relates to the travel alert issued last week by the US State Department for Americans in Europe, telling them to stay vigilant for terrorist attacks, especially in high profile areas like airports or tourist spots.
An American couple are shown sheltering behind a wall somewhere in France (the cartoonist has helpfully included a bistro). The woman tells her husband, who is about to cross the street to buy a baguette, that she appreciates the sacrifice he is making.

VOCABULARY
If you tell someone to get a grip, you want them to control their emotions.

COMMENT
Actually, there were several bomb scares in Paris last week, but they all turned out to be hoaxes. According to a recent poll, most French people believe the terrorist threat to their country is being exaggerated and that the government talks too much about the subject.

  1. Very interesting if you start thinking that western goverments spread more terror with their news than terroists themselves.
